Blue Urn

Ginger jars (urns) are identified by their high-shoulders, rounded shapes, small mouths, and domed lids, and were initially used to transport spices in China. It is said that the blue and white ginger jars, representative of the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368), were given as presents for special occasions and intended to last a lifetime. The artist has used pastel pigment to recreate the detailed floral design, and attained the glossy gleam of porcelain through her use of colours, shadows, and highlights. The green hue of the quinces is thrown onto the porcelain, interpreting the reflective surface. A black background contrasts with the light bathed subject.
